Biologist, Biocurators, Biolibrarians and Bioinformaticians

Here is a pending Biolibrarian proposal by Donaldson group at the Biotechnology Centre of Oslo. Proposal attempts to define a new kind of role ‘Biolibrarian’, which can fill the gap between Biologist and Biocurators. Proposal defines role of biolibrarian as broker between biologists and databases who will facilitate retrieval of biological information and submission of data to biological databases.
This is a two-way process that includes helping biologists find and use biological databases AND helping biologists submit data and feedback to biological databases.

There is no doubt that there is an urgent requirement for such a role but how exactly we can differentiate biolibrarians from others. At the end biologists, biocurators, and biolibrarians are all bioinformaticians. Biologist primarily focus on data generation and analysis (application oriented bioinformatics) while bioinformaticians writes codes, develop algorithms, design databases and data models (development oriented bioinformatics) . Biocurators work to populate specific databases by extracting information from literature and mostly this process is one directional. Role of biolibrarians does not require any coding or specific affiliation to a particular database. Biolibrarians are supposed to submit the data gathered by biologist to databases actively, and they will follow open access, open data, open standard and open source principles. So for everything looks great, but why exactly we need a new role instead of extending responsibilities of existing roles, for example providing more freedom and flexibility to biocurators. Biocurators generally work with specific groups or database projects and in long run funding such a position on group basis is an unsustainable solution. A biolibrarians will be not affiliated to any specific group, database or project, these positions are proposed at university level and hence this mechanism will dilute the funding issue in a distributed effort.
